WHAT CAN BE DONE FOR PREGNANT WOMEN ?

Women go trough many changes during pregnancy and there is increased demand put on their bodies.

This is true anatomically: the shape of the spine and ribs have to accommodate for the growing child, and where the centre of gravity shifts forward, requiring a change in posture, that may require certain muscles to work more than usual, also to deal with the normal increase in weight and with joints becoming more relaxed. The growing uterus will take more space in the abdomen, pushing its contents higher up in the thorax, where more room is needed and the ribs need to be mobile to allow for comfortable breathing.

This is also true physiologically; more oxygen is needed while lung capacity is decreased and more blood is needed to nourish the growing child and placenta.

Osteopathy can assist the body to go through all these normal changes and free the body's resources to focus on what is most important: the pregnancy. It can help release the strain at certain joints by distributing the work load evenly throughout the body, free the ribs to make breathing easier and help with normal circulation and drainage.

Throughout pregnancy, I am expecting mothers-to-be to secrete a bit more of the hormone relaxin, that will make joints that little bit more flexible and bodies that little bit more responsive to treatment, hence I'll usually tone down my treatments to pregnant women.

Osteopathic treatment is very safe, and there is no reason to think that it can cause any issues with pregnancy. To the contrary, it should ease tensions, as well as improve blood circulation and oxygenation. This being said, there is a slighly increased risk of miscarriage at weeks 4, 8 and 12 (hence the tendency to wait until after week 12 to announce the pregnancy to family and friends) and some osteopaths avoid treating women at these times. As the pregnancy progresses, lying on your front becomes complicated, and likewise lying on your back may become uncomfortable further still down the line. Treatment can always be adapted to avoid these positions when needed.

Many women go through pregnancy and suffer from aches and pains in their shoulders, mid and lower back, pubic symphisis (the front of the pelvis), but also constipation, difficulties with breathing, carpal tunnel syndrome, without knowing that osteopathy can provide a lot of relief.
