What to expect?
Your first appointment
The first appointment lasts for approximately one hour, but it’s best if you allow for 75min. The first half of the appointment is spent taking your medical case history. This includes the problem you are coming in for, any history related to it, and a full medical history. I might also be interested in you diet, sleeping habits, stress levels and other aspects of you life that may be relevant.
This is followed by a standing examination. It is best if you can dress down to your underwear at this point, since very often, the cause of the problem lies elsewhere in the body then where the symptoms are felt, and I need to be able to see it. You can also wear a pair of shorts if you wish. I see the pelvis as the foundation of the body - it is what the spine sits onto and gains its stability from, and it is where the legs hang off from, so it needs to be examined to make sure it is doing its job properly. I often make a quick sketch of your posture, as a reference for the future and a support to explain my reasoning to you.
I will then ask you to do a few active movements, and do any special tests that are appropriate (all non-invasive and always with your consent). From there I will formulate a diagnosis that I will explain to you, along with what treatment is appropriate.
Treatment mainly consists of gentle massage and articulation, to guide the body towards neutral and to free it from the barriers to recovery. I find that forceful techniques often “bounce“ off the body, and that gentle treatment has a much deeper and longer lasting effect.
At the end of the appointment, we will have another look at you standing and see what we have achieved as well as, if appropriate, what still needs to be done.
All the way through the appointment, I will always ask for your consent for any techniques that I do and you are fully entitled to change your mind at any point. Please always let me know if you are uncomfortable about anything, as we can always work something out.
After your first appointment
Different patients respond differently. Often, the benefits are immediate, but some may need a couple of days for the treatment to "kick in" and others may feel a bit worse for a day or two, as their body adjusts to the changes we've made. If you are unsure about your response to treatment, it is a good idea to call for reassurance and advice.
Some patients only need one treatment, in particular if the problem is quite recent. Other patients may need more treatment, especially if a problem has been going on for a long time, in which case it may need 3 or 4 treatments to see a real improvement.
Your osteopath will discuss with you what your aims are and tailor treatment to you, be it symptom relief, increased mobility, postural changes or maintenance treatment. It is easier to tell you how quickly these changes can take place after your first appointment.
Your follow-up appointment
Follow-up appointments generally last about 45min. The consultation starts with a quick chat about your response to the previous treatment, any new symptoms or evolution of symptoms, a brief examination of the key elements, to then carry on with the treatment plan outlined during the initial consultation. Most of the appointment will be spent in treatment, unless there is a new symptom present that needs to be investigated properly.
